Why Join DENEBTRIAD

DENEBTRIAD is a network of radio users preparing for disasters. As a member, you’ll learn to use walkie-talkies or ham radios to stay connected, whether it’s checking on family during a flood or helping CERT during a wildfire. You’ll share knowledge, run group nets, and build skills. Our channels are the standard; CERT teams should align with them.

Step 1: Get Started with Radios

Start with these radios:

FRS Radios: No license, ~$30 (Retevis), 1–2 miles.

Example: Call neighbors during a tornado, “Safe at home.”

GMRS Radios: $35 license, ~$25 (Baofeng UV-5R), 2–5 miles.

Example: Coordinate during a hurricane, “Evacuate now.”

Ham Radios: License needed (arrl.org), regional reach.

Example: Contact hams during a flood for help.

Check with CERT (fema.gov/cert) to use our channels. Practice radios on HAMQuiz.

Step 2: Learn Key Skills

Master these to join:

PACE Plan: Primary, Alternate, Contingency, Emergency layers.

Example: Use FRS Channel 1 as Primary during a wildfire.

Protocols: Clear messages, like “over” to end.

Example: “This is Alex, need food, FRS 1, over.”

Group Nets: Scheduled radio meetups.

Example: Run a net during a tornado, “Check in, over.”

Practice on HAMQuiz’s PACE, Messages, and Nets banks. See our PACE Plan and Protocols pages.

Step 3: Connect with DENEBTRIAD

Join our Constellation:

Sign Up: Email contact@hamquiz.org with your name and radio interest.

Join Nets: Participate in weekly FRS Channel 1 nets.

Example: “This is Sarah, joining net, over.”

Share Plans: Exchange PACE plans with members.

See our Join Us page for details.

Step 4: Support Your Community

As a member, you’ll:

Run Nets: Lead neighbors in radio check-ins.

Example: During a flood, “Net starting, FRS 1, over.”

Help Caregivers: Set up easy radios for dementia patients.

Example: Pre-set FRS Channel 1 for one-button use.

Work with CERT: Share our channels for EmComm.

Practice community skills on HAMQuiz.

Step 5: Keep Growing

Stay sharp:

Use HAMQuiz quizzes.
